PHOTO GALLERY - Past MI Members
Jori '28  NED  (2002-2004)
March 17, 2008  Talked to Jori on the phone. She is still rowing but not as frequently as in past years.
April 25, 2015  News from her club: Jori comes to a weekly tea session. She still remembers about her rowing but only vaguely and it takes her time to remember.
Lies '34  NED   (2001-2004)
2005: Lies can only train in her single but this was becoming more and more dangerous. She wears thick glasses and turning her head to check on her course and river traffic was becoming increasingly more difficult. So, reluctantly, she decided to give up rowing completely. She was interested to join us in Hazewinkel for a 4x race but we did not have enough 80+ women.
Sybil '35  USA  (2006)
Although a new and only a recreational rower, Sybil had the courage to fill the last empty seat so that we could enter a WH8+ at Princeton. She enjoyed the Princeton experience but decided afterwards that she is a true recreational rower and the racing scene is not really for her.
Lucy '36  USA  (2001 & 2005)
2008:  Lucy is still rowing, a little sweeping but mostly sculling. At this time, no plans to get back to racing.
Helma '35  USA (2001 & 2005)
2008: Helma had a hip replacement in the summer of 2007. She is back to rowing but has difficulty getting in and out of the boat because of the hip. She now only sculls and at this time, has no plans to race again.
Ernie W  '19  GER (1992)
2006: Ernie raced her 1x at several more FISA Masters Regattas after Cologne. But when I asked her to join our crews for the 2006 EuroMasters in Munich (her hometown), she decided her racing days were over. She would, however, continue rowing for recreation and fun as long as she was able.
Rozi '32  HUN  (2003, 2007, 2009)
Rozi was not able to come to FISA Masters after 2009 because of her husband's bad health. She has now given up racing.
Laurette '34  USA (2001, 2006)
For many years, Laurette continued to compete at the Head of the Charles in her single. 2016 was the first time she was absent!
Nelly '15 AUS  (2001-2010)
Nelly started rowing at age 12 and quit at 22; then took it up again as a master. After a long and successful racing career, spanning 30 years (10 of them with MI), she decided the time had come to hang up her oars. Traveling alone from Australia was becoming harder and harder and the long days at FISA Masters Regattas were becoming more stressful every year. She had also lost all of her Perth training partners and so did not have anybody to train with anymore. She has donated her sculling oars to a promising young girl at her club. She will be missed!
Lynette '41  USA  (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012)
Lynette will not row with MI at FISA Masters any longer. However, she will continue to race in Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.
Kate '41  USA (1991, 1992 US Masters, 2001, 2006, 2009 US Masters, 2010 US Masters, 2010)
Kate was a longtime enthusiastic member of Masters International and MastersUSA. She had to give up rowing because of problems with her hands.
Sal '29  USA  (2001, 2006, 2009 US Masters, 2010 US Masters)
Would love to continue racing with our group but too many health problems, especially heart problems
Almut '38  GER  (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2012)
Almut regrettably had to stop rowing and racing because of health reasons.

Marjorie '29  USA  (2001, 2010)
Not sure if she will be able to join us in future regattas. By the time there is one which she can attend she may not be able to still race

EvaH '35 HUN     2002, 2004 EuroMasters, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 EuroMasters, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016 EuroMasters

After rowing with MI for all these years, Eva decided it was finally time to retire. She will be missed!

mixed member

Burk '25 USA (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013)

He is the founder of the OAR society inf 2007. This movement has resulted in more older rowers, especially men, to participate at FISA Masters. This also motivated FISA to add the J and K categories. Although not competing in races anymore, he will continue to keep fit by rowing on the erg.

mixed member
Otto '31 GER (2008, 2009, 2010 EuroMasters, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 EuroMasters, 2015, 2016 EuroMasters, 2016
At the regattas, Otto was always in full charge of his crews, relieving me of all worries and stress. He was also an annual donor to our MI kitty.  He is leaving a big hole and will be sorely missed!
Eve '32 USA  2001, 2005 US Masters, 2006, 2010
For the last few years Eve has been rowing only with her club and now races only once in a while at US Masters

Nov 5

Vivienne '34 CAN  2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013

She decided that FISA Masters was just too much, especially since she had less and less opportunity at her club to row in crews.

Jan 12

Eva Savel '44  GER  2001 EuroMasters, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 EuroMasters, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 EuroMasters, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016 EuroMasters

Eva was a core MI member for many years. Unfortunately, a bad bike accident injured her leg and hip very badly. She needed metal screws and plates for repair. She was able to come back for a couple of years but now the metal pieces are causing

severe problems. She will no longer be able to row.

Rosa '31, ESP

Nov 5

2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014 EuroMasters

They arrived in Trakai as total novices to FISA Masters Regattas. They also had no experience in rowing in big boats so kept catching crabs during their races that first year. But they learned quickly and became our MI "mascots", liked and enjoyed by everyone!

Penny '42  USA   2006, 2007, 2009 US Masters, 2009, 2010 US Masters, 2010, 2011, 2012 US Masters, 2012, 2013, 2016 US Masters, 2016
Bill Hawkey '31 USA    2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016 US Masters, 2016
Penny & Bill were with us for many years. But Bill's health problems and both of them not finding rowing partners anymore, made them decide to hang up their oars.

IN MEMORIUM
Oldest Rower:  ERNIE BAYER   1909-2006
photo was taken at the 2001 FISA Masters, Montreal
For more information about her contribution to rowing and a memorial service photo essay
Letty LeFebre '16  FRA (1991,1992)
After Letty raced the WH2x  with Odette Infrey '23 FRA at the 1996 FISA Masters, she disappeared from the rowing scene.
May 2008 - from RC Cannes Mandelieu..."We don't have any news about Letty LeFebvre ('19 FRA) since several years."
Seems she died in 2009 but nobody has any details
mixed member
Rod Johnson '28 USA
(2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009)
Rod was a very quiet mixed member but always willing to sit in any crew. Usually together with his friend Cameron.
He died very quickly just before Christmas 2009
Marie-Claire Barnier '40  FRA  (2004, 2005, 2006 EuroMasters, 2006)
Marie-Claire became a dedicated MI member right from the beginning.
She died June 3, 2009 after fighting cancer for 3 years.
Annelise Hem '35  NOR  (2003-2009)
Annelise joined in 2003 and quickly became a core member of MI. She especially was a mainstay of the 70+ group and always took charge of her crews during races. Her cheerfulness and dependability will be greatly missed.
She successfully fought cancer to race with us in Vienna in 2009. Her cancer returned later that year. She again fought a valiant battle but died Oct  2010.
Renata Gostynska '22  POL (2010 EuroMasters, 2011)
After a physical problem and surgery for it, Renata passed away peacefully at home in her own bed in early 2012. She was a dedicated and experienced rower and fierce competitor. She  became a enthusiastic MI member from the minute she joined us and talked about the group until the very end. Even after only two years with us, she will leave a big hole.
Winnie Rich '38  USA (1992 US Masters, 2001)
Received a message on 9th of July from her husband Dave that Winnie lost her fight with lung cancer and passed away on July 5, 2012.  He said that at the end she was ready to go.
mixed member
Julije '32 CRO (2006 EuroMasters, 2007, 2008, 2009), aka "JUMBO" by his friends, passed away on July 18, 2013, only 2 weeks after a diagnosis of cancer.  He was always a great addition to our mixed crews and will be missed by those who knew him.  His joy of rowing was infectious and an inspiration to all of us! Unfortunately, we had him only for four years in our MI mixed crews. In 2010 he could not come to Canada. In 2011 we had lost several older women so he was too young for our older crews. In 2012 he did not want to row mixed.
Gertrude Zims '17  USA (1992)
Gertrude jumped in at the last minute when one of our crew members did not show up in Cologne.
Although she did not come to another FISA, she was very active in competitive swimming.
In 2011 she had to go to a nursing because her memory was failing.  By 2012 her memory was totally gone.

Gertrude died on Oct 31, 2013
Heidemarie Schefer '42 GER (2009)
died on May 2, 2014  after a 3-year battle with cancer.
She rowed with us only once but always remembered how much she enjoyed the group

Waltraud Kuenzler '42  SUI (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 EuroMasters, 2002)
Waltraud died on August 2014. She fought cancer and other illnesses for many years.
She enjoyed rowing with MI very much and kept in touch regularly after she had to give up racing.

Always a good "team player", she would have enjoyed being part of our now so much larger MI group

mixed member
J
ack Sholl '25 USA  (who rowed with us for many years) died in spring 2014 after a very long battle with cancer.  He will be missed by all of us who knew him personally.  Always enthusiastic...willing to sit in whatever boat needed a rower....creating team spirit in all his crews....loved rowing mixed with MI. His wife Joan was an official at many regattas, including US Masters and annually at FISA Masters. It was always reassuring to hear her calming voice at the starting line.
Here is a good article in US Rowing:

Eva Velesikova '42  CZE (1997, 2001 EuroMasters, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 EuroMasters, 2007, 2008, 2010 EuroMasters, 2011, 2012, 2013)
Eva died on June 27, 2015 after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. She fought her illness the same way she fought on the water....hard! She was one of  the most dedicated MI members, traveling all alone long distances by bus and train to join us at the various venues. Always cheerful and smiling, she was happy to row in any crew. She rowed in open competition 1957-1966, and started masters rowing in 1996. One year later she joined MI at the 1997 Adelaide FISA Masters and stayed!

Joey Peter '47, cox  NY died on Nov 3, 2016  from lung cancer. As of March, he was still planning to come to US Masters and FISA Masters. He coxed us since 2004, mostly at FISA Masters. His last FISA with us was in Varese but then he got very busy coxing his mens crews and we had to fill his place  with other coxswains.

Liz Stone '27  CA  2001, 2006
A long-time dedicated rower and competitor (competing in her 18th Head of the Charles Regatta at age 86!), and overseer of boat maintenance at Open Water Rowing Club for 15 years, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2017.
Because of her many health problems, she competed with us only 2 years but enjoyed both FISA Masters Regattas and our group very much..
mixed member
Charles Eugster '19  SUI  2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013

Charles was a staunch MI mixed member until he decided it was time to retire in 2013.
Although he quit competitive rowing, he continued to race short erg pieces and compete at various track and field events.
He died of heart related problems on April 27, 2017.
Penelope (P*) '35  USA (2006-2009)
With a sad heart, Penelope had to give up rowing because of nerve damage in her arm. She was all set to row with us at the 2010 FISA Masters in St. Catharines
It was a shock to hear that P* died on July 16, only 2 months after she still talked about her rowing experiences and wanted a
photo of her Camden 4- to incorporate in one of her glass works.

mixed  member

Lew Cuyler '33  USA  2006 Princeton, 2007, 2008, 2009

Lew died Nov 3 of complications from Alzheimer's, from which he suffered for many years and which kept him from rowing with us

after 2009. He was the founder of Berkshire Rowing and Sculling Society and one of the most enthusiastic masters rowers.

He was the husband of our past MI women's member Harriet.

Whatever happened to some of the non-MI 70-Plus Women?
May 2008 - from RC Aviron St. Quentinois...    "Odette Infrey ('23 FRA) died in 2003 at hospital. She was very sick"
Oct 2 2008 - from Wiener RC LIA...    "Maria Strasser ('22 AUT) ist, nach mehrjaehrigem Aufenthalt in einem Altersheim, vor kurzem gestorben"
"Maria Strasser ('22 AUT), after several years in an extended care facility, died a short while ago."

Does anybody know anything about  Moyra Robinson '32   RSA ?
